Why did you decide to start the festival?
I started THE END about 10 years ago as a two-venue thing in Crouch End near where I used to live - hence "the end". It grew into something like about ten venues over a period of time and was at times brilliant and chaotic and at others just chaotic.
What is the ethos and aim for this edition?
This is my fitting send off to the EU. It might not happen. But it should, and we will drink to that. And we will drink to the collaboration and artistic work that membership of the EU has made easier for us.
My own position on all this as a person who voted remain is that there have been lies and complacency and arrogance and ineptitude displayed by both sides. I feel somehow responsible but I also wonder why I should, as I haven’t lied, or used any ridiculous language (like someone actually at war would use) and I’m really bored of it all now, which might just be the point for all the politicians - bore them into submission.
I’m throwing this event to celebrate the work we do, and to promise that whatever happens on 29 March this year, I’ll work to redouble my own efforts to collaborate more with artists from mainland Europe and the EU, and I’ll be looking to start/support/join any movement to rejoin the EU, from 30 March onwards. I’m neither calling for nor sticking the boot into a second vote. I’d be comfortable with one, and I’d vote remain again.
For now though, we celebrate and we collaborate!
